METENVIA makes the impact of aviation measurable
The ZHAW research group develops scientific foundations and technologies in Dübendorf for more climate-compatible aviation.
In what ways do aircraft emissions interact with the atmosphere and surrounding ecosystems beyond the impact of CO2? That question drives the METENVIA team—a multidisciplinary group of engineers, chemists, and environmental scientists working to better understand how aircraft engine emissions interact with the environment and affect human and environmental health.
They utilize the Swiss Mobile Aircraft Emission Measurement System (SMARTEMIS) to conduct high-precision, real-time measurements of gaseous and particulate emissions directly from the exhaust of operational engines. This unique system was originally developed by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) and has since undergone continuous development and optimization. This infrastructure is complemented by an on-site mini-turbine test stand, enabling localized measurement campaigns and experimental trials (e.g., including small scale emissions tests for fuel optimization in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development), and student laboratory courses.
Innovation Park Zurich offers METENVIA a decisive locational advantage: the direct proximity to Dübendorf airfield provides ideal conditions for emission measurements on aircraft and helicopters under real-world conditions. Integration into the Space Hub further promotes knowledge exchange with the University of Zurich and other research partners, creating an environment that actively encourages new projects and industrial collaborations.
